Pisa is popular for its leaning bell tower, but
there are a lot more to see in this site of rich cultural heritage
and historical significance.
Walk through the impressive Knight’s Square and marvel at
its grand facade. In the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri,
you can see the bust by Donatello, paintings by Vasari, Jacopo Ligozzi,
Alessandro Fei, and Jacopo Chimenti da Empoli. It also houses the
ancient spoils of wars between the Cavalieri Knights and the Turks.
In the Church of St. Francis, feast your eyes on the grant paintings
and works by Jacopo da Empoli, Taddeo Gaddi and Santi di Tito. The
Church of San Frediano, dating back to 1061, shows the works by
Ventura Salimbeni, Domenico Passignano, Aurelio Lomi, and Rutilio
Manetti. You can also walk through the Borgo Stretto, where there
are medieval arcades.
Have a look at the Medici Palace, where once ruled the great Appiano
family, in 1392–1398. You will also find in Pisa the Orto
botanico di Pisa, which is the oldest botanical garden in the University.
Scour through the Palazzo Reale, where Galileo Galilei demonstrated
the telescope to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The former town hall
Palazzo Gambacorti is a Gothic building from the 14th century. Here
you can see magnificent frescoes of Pisa’s sea victories.
Pisa also has several exciting museums such as the Museo dell'Opera
del Duomo that showcases the original sculptures of Nicola Pisano
and Giovanni Pisano. The Museo delle Sinopie exhibits the Sinopias
from the monumental cemetery. Go to the Nazionale di S. Matteo to
see sculptures and painting from the 12th –15th centuries.
